Radiology at Samrijo

Radiology (diagnostic imaging) uses X-rays, sound waves and other techniques to create pictures of the inside of the body. At Samrijo Hospital, imaging supports our surgical, gastro, liver, urology and emergency services, so decisions can be made quickly without sending patients elsewhere for each scan.

This is a general guide; please confirm which scans are available on-site.

How imaging helps your care

Imaging helps doctors confirm a diagnosis (for example gallstones or a hernia), plan surgery (the size and position of a stone or lump), guide procedures (ultrasound-guided drainage of an abscess or needle tests of a lump), and check recovery (confirming a liver abscess is shrinking). Choosing the right scan avoids unnecessary radiation and cost.

Safety

  • Ultrasound uses no radiation and is safe for everyone, including in pregnancy.
  • X-ray and CT use radiation. Doses for routine X-rays are very small; CT doses are higher and are used when the benefit is clear.
  • Tell the staff if you are pregnant or might be.
  • MRI uses magnets. Tell the team about pacemakers, metal implants or clips.
  • Sex determination of a foetus is prohibited by law (PCPNDT Act) and is not performed.

Booking a scan

  • Scans are usually advised by a doctor after a consultation, so the right test is chosen.
  • Emergency patients are scanned on priority.
  • Bring your prescription, previous scans (films or CDs) and reports for comparison.
  • Call 93196 62944 for timings and preparation instructions.

Preparation guide

  • Abdominal ultrasound: fast for about 6 hours; you may take small sips of water and your usual medicines.
  • Pelvic / bladder ultrasound: drink 4–5 glasses of water an hour before and don't pass urine until the scan.
  • X-ray: no special preparation for most; remove jewellery, hairpins and other metal items before the image is taken.
  • Doppler: wear loose clothing that allows the legs to be examined, and avoid applying lotion on the day.
  • Contrast CT: kidney function test and fasting may be needed; tell the team about allergies and diabetes medicines.

Ultrasound-guided procedures

Ultrasound isn't only for pictures. It can guide a thin needle precisely to the right spot, which makes some procedures safer and less invasive. Examples include draining a liver abscess or other fluid collection without open surgery, taking a sample from a breast or thyroid lump (FNAC or core biopsy), and placing a small drain. These are usually done under local anaesthesia, and many patients go home the same day.

Understanding your scan report

Scan reports use technical terms that can sound alarming out of context: "hypoechoic lesion", "mild hepatomegaly", "grade 1 fatty liver". Many such findings are common and harmless; some need follow-up. Always discuss your report with the doctor who ordered the scan, who will interpret it together with your symptoms and other tests. Keep all your reports and films in one folder; comparing with earlier scans is often the most useful part of reading a new one.

Why choose Samrijo for imaging

  • Same building as your doctor and the lab, so results reach the right person quickly.
  • Supports emergencies and surgery at any hour.
  • Close to home in Burari.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ultrasound safe?

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and is safe for adults, children and during pregnancy.

How much radiation is there in an X-ray?

A routine X-ray uses a very small dose of radiation. Tell the staff if you are or might be pregnant so they can take extra precautions or choose another test.

Do I need to fast before an ultrasound?

For an abdominal ultrasound (liver, gallbladder, pancreas), fasting for about 6 hours usually gives clearer images. For a pelvic or bladder ultrasound, you may need a full bladder. Instructions are given when you book.

Do you do CT scans or MRI?

Please call the hospital to check which scans are available on-site and which are arranged at a partner centre.

Do you do pregnancy scans or tell the sex of the baby?

Sex determination of a foetus is illegal in India under the PCPNDT Act, and is not done. Please call to check which obstetric scans are available.

When will I get my report?

Many X-ray and ultrasound reports are available the same day.
