Upper GI Endoscopy in Burari, Delhi

An upper GI endoscopy lets the doctor look directly inside your food pipe, stomach and the first part of the small intestine using a thin, flexible camera. It is one of the most useful tests for long-standing acidity, stomach pain, swallowing problems and bleeding, and it takes only a few minutes.

What is an upper GI endoscopy?

An upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, also called OGD or UGI endoscopy, uses an endoscope: a thin, flexible tube about the width of a little finger with a light and camera at its tip. It is passed gently through the mouth to examine:

  • the oesophagus (food pipe)
  • the stomach
  • the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine)

Images appear on a screen in real time. The doctor can take tiny tissue samples (biopsies) and, in some cases, treat problems during the same test.

Symptoms it investigates

  • Acidity, heartburn or indigestion that keeps coming back despite medicines
  • Upper abdominal pain or a burning feeling
  • Difficulty or pain swallowing, or food sticking
  • Vomiting blood or black stools
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Unexplained anaemia or weight loss
  • Feeling full very quickly after starting a meal

Conditions it can find

  • Gastritis and peptic ulcers
  • H. pylori infection (by biopsy or rapid test)
  • Reflux oesophagitis and hiatus hernia
  • Oesophageal varices in liver cirrhosis
  • Bleeding points
  • Narrowing (strictures) and growths of the food pipe or stomach
  • Coeliac disease (by duodenal biopsy)

Risk factors that make these problems more likely include frequent use of painkillers (NSAIDs), smoking, alcohol, obesity and a family history of stomach cancer.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if acidity or indigestion is frequent or lasts more than a few weeks. Seek urgent care if you have:

  • Vomiting blood or "coffee-ground" material
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Difficulty swallowing that is getting worse
  • Unexplained weight loss, especially if you are over 45
  • Severe, sudden upper abdominal pain

Endoscopy at Samrijo

Before the test, the doctor reviews your symptoms, medicines and past reports, and orders blood tests at the in-house laboratory if needed.

Diagnostic and therapeutic uses

Diagnostic endoscopy

Most tests

Looking, photographing and taking biopsies to find the cause of symptoms.

Good for

  • Direct view, far more accurate than guessing from symptoms

Keep in mind

  • Needs fasting; sedation means no driving that day

Therapeutic endoscopy

Selected cases

Treating problems during the test: stopping bleeding with clips or injection, band ligation of varices, stretching a narrowing, or removing small polyps or swallowed objects.

Good for

  • Can avoid surgery

Keep in mind

  • Slightly higher risk than a diagnostic test

What to expect

Before

Fast for 6–8 hours. Tell the team about blood thinners, diabetes medicines and allergies. Remove dentures. You will be asked for consent.

During

You lie on your left side. The throat is numbed with spray; sedation may be given. A mouth guard protects your teeth. The scope is passed gently; you can breathe normally throughout. Most tests take 5–15 minutes.

After

You rest for a short while (longer if sedated). A mild sore throat or bloating is common and settles within hours. Eat once the throat numbness wears off, usually in about an hour.

Results

The doctor explains the findings the same day. Biopsy results follow in a few days.

Safety and risks

Upper GI endoscopy is a common and generally safe test. Minor effects such as a sore throat or bloating are common. Serious complications, such as bleeding after a biopsy, a reaction to sedation or, very rarely, a tear in the gut wall, are uncommon. The risk is slightly higher when a treatment is performed. The doctor will discuss the risks with you before the test.

Special situations

People with diabetes should ask how to adjust insulin or tablets while fasting, and bring a snack for afterwards. People with heart or lung disease, or who take blood thinners, need a short review before the test so it can be done safely. If you are pregnant, tell the team; endoscopy is done only when clearly needed. Older adults can usually have endoscopy safely, often with lighter sedation.

Endoscopy compared with other tests

A barium swallow (X-ray after drinking contrast) can show the outline of the food pipe but cannot take biopsies or treat problems. A breath or stool test can detect H. pylori but doesn't show ulcers or other causes. An ultrasound shows the liver and gallbladder, not the inside of the stomach. Endoscopy gives the most complete answer for most upper GI symptoms, which is why it is usually the preferred test when one is needed.

Your endoscopy checklist

  • Fasting: nothing to eat for 6–8 hours; small sips of water may be allowed up to about two hours before, if the team agrees.
  • Medicines: bring a list. Ask in advance about blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin and newer ones), insulin and diabetes tablets.
  • Reports: bring previous endoscopy reports, biopsies, ultrasound and blood tests.
  • Companion: bring someone if you plan to have sedation.
  • Comfort: wear loose clothes; remove dentures, spectacles and jewellery before the test.
  • Questions to ask: Why is this test needed for me? Will biopsies be taken? When will I get the results, and what happens next?

Myths and facts

  • "Endoscopy will stop my breathing." No. The scope goes down the food pipe, not the windpipe. You breathe normally through your nose and mouth throughout.
  • "If my acidity improves with tablets, I never need an endoscopy." Not always. People with warning signs, such as difficulty swallowing, weight loss, bleeding or anaemia, or those whose symptoms keep returning, may still need one.
  • "A biopsy means the doctor suspects cancer." Not necessarily. Biopsies are routinely taken to check for H. pylori, coeliac disease and inflammation.
  • "It takes a long time to recover." Most people go home within an hour or two and return to normal activities the next day, or the same day without sedation.

Frequently asked questions

Is endoscopy painful?

Most people find it uncomfortable rather than painful. A throat spray numbs the back of the throat, and sedation may be offered to help you relax. The test usually takes 5–15 minutes.

Can I eat before an endoscopy?

No. You usually need to fast for about 6–8 hours so that the stomach is empty. Small sips of water may be allowed up to a few hours before. You will get exact instructions when you book.

Can I drive home after endoscopy?

If you had sedation, you should not drive, ride a two-wheeler or operate machinery for the rest of the day. Please bring someone with you. With throat spray only, you can usually go home on your own.

What can an endoscopy find?

It can find inflammation, ulcers, reflux damage, hiatus hernia, H. pylori infection (with a biopsy), enlarged veins (varices), bleeding points and growths. A biopsy can be taken painlessly during the test.

When will I get the results?

The doctor can usually tell you what was seen straight after the test. Biopsy results take a few days.

What does an endoscopy cost in Delhi?

It depends on whether it is diagnostic only or needs biopsy or treatment, and whether sedation is used. Call 93196 62944 for the current price.
