What is a hernia?

The muscles of the belly wall hold the organs inside. A hernia forms when there is a weak spot or gap, and fat or a loop of intestine pushes through it, creating a bulge under the skin. Common types are:

  • Inguinal hernia: in the groin, more common in men
  • Umbilical / para-umbilical hernia: at or near the navel
  • Incisional hernia: through the scar of a previous operation
  • Femoral hernia: just below the groin crease, more common in women
  • Epigastric hernia: in the upper middle belly

A hiatus hernia (inside the chest) is different; see GI surgery.

Symptoms

  • A bulge or lump that appears when standing, coughing or straining, and often disappears when lying down
  • Heaviness, dragging or aching in the groin or belly, worse by the end of the day
  • Discomfort when lifting, bending or coughing
  • In men, swelling that may extend into the scrotum

Causes and risk factors

  • Heavy lifting and straining at work or the gym
  • Chronic cough (smoking, COPD) and chronic constipation
  • Straining to pass urine, for example from an enlarged prostate
  • Obesity and pregnancy
  • Previous abdominal surgery, especially with wound infection
  • Natural weakness present from birth; ageing

When to see a doctor

See a surgeon for any new lump in the groin or belly. Go to emergency care immediately if the hernia:

  • Becomes very painful, hard or tender and won't go back in
  • Turns red, purple or dark
  • Comes with vomiting, a swollen belly or inability to pass stool or gas

These are signs of a strangulated or obstructed hernia, where the blood supply to the trapped bowel is cut off. This needs urgent surgery. Call 93196 62944; we are open 24×7.

How a hernia is diagnosed at Samrijo

  • Examination while standing and lying down, and while coughing, is usually enough.
  • Ultrasound for small or unclear hernias, or to check the contents.
  • CT scan for large or complex incisional hernias.
  • Pre-operative tests at the in-house lab, plus ECG and chest X-ray as needed.

Treatment options

1. Watchful waiting

Small, painless groin hernias

Some people with minimal symptoms, or those with health reasons to delay surgery, can be observed for a while.

Good for

  • Avoids or delays surgery

Keep in mind

  • Hernias tend to grow; small risk of strangulation

2. Laparoscopic mesh repair (TEP / TAPP)

Most groin hernias

Through three small cuts, the hernia is reduced and a mesh is placed behind the muscle to reinforce the weak area.

Good for

  • Small scars, often less pain
  • Both sides can be repaired at once
  • Good for recurrent hernias after open repair

Keep in mind

  • Needs general anaesthesia
  • Small risks: bleeding, seroma, infection, recurrence

3. Open mesh repair (Lichtenstein)

Many groin hernias

A cut over the hernia; the mesh is placed in front of the muscle.

Good for

  • Can be done under spinal or local anaesthesia
  • Well-established

Keep in mind

  • Slightly longer recovery than keyhole for many

4. Umbilical & incisional hernia repair

Belly wall hernias

Small umbilical hernias may be stitched or repaired with a small mesh; larger and incisional hernias are often repaired laparoscopically or with open mesh techniques.

Good for

  • Mesh lowers recurrence

Keep in mind

  • Large hernias need more complex repair and a longer stay

What to expect

Before

Examination, tests and an anaesthesia check. If you smoke, stopping before surgery helps healing. Control of cough and constipation lowers strain on the repair. Fast for about six hours.

During

Most groin hernia repairs take about an hour. Larger incisional hernias can take longer.

After

You'll be encouraged to walk the same day. Mild pain and some swelling or bruising are common and settle over days. Many patients go home the same day or next.

Recovery timeline

TimeTypical activity (varies by person and repair)
Day 1–3Walking at home, light daily tasks, pain tablets as needed
Week 1–2Desk work often possible; short drives once you can brake comfortably
Week 2–4Gradually more activity; avoid heavy lifting
After 4–6 weeksMost people return to heavier work and exercise, as your surgeon advises

To protect the repair, avoid constipation, treat any chronic cough, and keep a healthy weight. When you cough or sneeze in the first weeks, gently press a small pillow against the wound for support. Some numbness or a small firm ridge under the scar is common and usually softens over a few months. Tell your surgeon if you notice a new bulge.

Myths and facts

  • "A hernia belt will cure it." A belt only holds the bulge in; the weak spot remains and often grows.
  • "Exercises can close a hernia." Exercise strengthens muscles but cannot close an existing gap. It can help prevent new hernias.
  • "Once repaired, I can never lift anything again." After healing, most people return to full activity, including work that involves lifting.
  • "Children's hernias should wait until they grow up." Groin hernias in children are usually repaired soon after diagnosis; small navel hernias in infants often close by themselves. A surgeon should decide.

  • Do you recommend laparoscopic or open repair for me, and why?
  • What type of mesh will be used?
  • When can I return to my kind of work, drive, and lift weights?

Frequently asked questions

Can a hernia go away on its own?

No. A hernia in an adult does not close by itself; it usually gets slowly bigger over time. Some small, painless hernias can be watched for a while, but surgery is the only permanent fix.

Is mesh safe?

Mesh repair is the standard method for most groin and many belly hernias, because it lowers the chance of the hernia coming back. Like any implant, it has small risks such as infection or long-term discomfort, which your surgeon will discuss.

Laparoscopic or open hernia repair: which is better?

Both are effective. Laparoscopic repair usually means smaller cuts, less pain and a quicker return to work, and suits hernias on both sides or recurrent hernias. Open repair may be preferred in some patients and under certain anaesthesia types. Your surgeon will advise.

Can I lift weights after hernia surgery?

Light activity and walking start almost immediately. Heavy lifting is usually avoided for several weeks, depending on the type of repair. Your surgeon will give you a timeline.

Will wearing a hernia belt cure my hernia?

No. A belt (truss) may give temporary comfort but does not repair the weak muscle, and it can make a later operation harder. It is not a substitute for surgery.

What does hernia surgery cost?

It depends on the type and size of hernia, one or both sides, laparoscopic or open, the mesh used, stay and insurance. Call 93196 62944 for an estimate.
