Why the right tests matter
Tests help doctors confirm a diagnosis, check fitness for surgery and anaesthesia, choose the right antibiotic for an infection, and monitor treatment, such as sugar control or liver recovery. Doing more tests isn't always better; the right tests, chosen for your symptoms, give clearer answers and save money.
Understanding your results
Lab reports show your result next to a "reference range". A value slightly outside the range isn't always a problem, and a normal value doesn't always rule a condition out. Results should be read by a doctor alongside your symptoms and examination. Please don't start or stop medicines based on a report alone. Contact a doctor promptly if your report is marked critical or you've been told to seek urgent care.
Getting tested
- With a consultation: the doctor advises the tests you need, and samples are collected in the hospital.
- Before surgery: a standard pre-operative panel is arranged as part of your surgical plan.
- In an emergency: urgent samples are prioritised at any hour.
- Reports: collected from the desk, or shared as advised.
Preparation guide
- Fasting tests (fasting sugar, lipid profile): nothing to eat for 8–12 hours; plain water is fine.
- Post-meal sugar: test 2 hours after starting a normal meal.
- Urine tests: a mid-stream sample in a sterile container; early-morning samples are often preferred.
- Medicines: take routine medicines unless told otherwise; tell the staff about blood thinners, and about thyroid tablets before thyroid tests.
- Bring your prescription and previous reports for comparison. Trends over time often matter more than a single result.
Tests before surgery
Before an operation under anaesthesia, a set of tests checks that it is safe to proceed. A typical pre-operative panel includes a blood count, sugar, kidney function, clotting tests and viral markers, with an ECG and chest X-ray for some patients. The exact tests depend on your age, your health conditions and the operation planned. Having these done in the hospital means your surgeon and anaesthetist see the results straight away, and any abnormal value can be dealt with before the surgery date.
Tips for a smooth sample collection
- Drink water before a blood test (unless told not to); it makes veins easier to find.
- Wear a loose-sleeved shirt or top.
- If you feel faint with needles, tell the staff; you can lie down.
- Press firmly on the site for a few minutes afterwards to prevent bruising.
- For children, bring a toy or snack and stay with them throughout.
- If you are diabetic and fasting, bring something to eat straight after the sample is taken.
