What is general surgery?
General surgery covers operations on many parts of the body: the abdomen and its organs, the skin and soft tissues, the breast, the thyroid, the veins and the anal region. General surgeons are also usually the first specialists called for surgical emergencies. At Samrijo Hospital, general surgery is led by Dr. Arun Kumar Patel (MBBS, MS (General Surgery)), and much of it is done with laser or laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques where suitable.
Conditions we commonly see
Lumps and swellings. Breast lumps, thyroid swellings, lipomas, sebaceous cysts and enlarged lymph nodes. Most are harmless, but all deserve a proper check. Many can be removed as a quick day-care procedure.
Abdominal wall problems. Hernias of the groin, navel and old scars, repaired with mesh, often laparoscopically.
Gallbladder and appendix. Gallbladder stones and appendicitis, two of the most common reasons for abdominal surgery.
Anal conditions. Piles, fissure, fistula, abscess and pilonidal sinus, covered by our proctology centre.
Veins. Varicose veins, with stockings, laser or other treatments.
Infections and wounds. Abscesses, infected wounds and diabetic foot ulcers, which need prompt drainage, cleaning and careful follow-up.
Our approach
Diagnosis first. A careful examination and the right tests, with lab and radiology in the same building, so decisions are based on facts.
The least invasive option that works. Monitoring or medicines when that's enough; keyhole or laser techniques when they suit your condition; open surgery when it's the safest choice.
Honest explanations. You'll know what the operation involves, the likely stay and recovery, and the realistic risks, in Hindi or English.
Follow-up. A check after surgery and a clear plan for tissue reports and any further care. When a condition needs a super-specialist, we will tell you and help you get there.
Day-care surgery: home the same day
Many general surgical procedures no longer need an overnight stay. Removal of small lumps and cysts, drainage of abscesses, many proctology procedures, some hernia repairs and laser vein treatment can often be done as day-care: you arrive in the morning, have the procedure, rest for a few hours, and go home the same day with clear written instructions. Day-care is only offered when it is safe for you, taking into account your age, other health conditions, the type of anaesthesia and whether someone can stay with you at home. If you do need to stay, the hospital provides round-the-clock nursing and medical care.
Recovery that fits your life
We understand that many patients run shops, work shifts, or care for family, and need to know exactly when they can return to normal life. Before any operation, you'll get a realistic timeline for walking, driving, desk work, heavy work and exercise, based on your procedure and your job. Recovery varies from person to person, so we review it again at follow-up.
When to seek urgent surgical care
- Sudden severe abdominal pain, or pain that keeps getting worse
- A hernia that becomes painful, hard and won't go back
- A hot, red, painful swelling with fever (possible abscess)
- A wound or foot ulcer that is spreading, smelly or turning black

Before your visit
Bring previous reports and scans, a list of all your medicines (especially blood thinners, diabetes and blood pressure tablets), and any questions you want answered. If you have noticed a lump, note when it appeared and whether it has changed. That history is often as important as the examination.
